Rain. It dripped over the jungle leaves bending them under its weight. They released the droplets one by one creating a steady, rhythmic dripping. The jungle animals played a band of natural instruments that sang through the afternoon air. A bug crawling up the wall of her bamboo hut caught her attention as it’s color brightened the wet, green jungle.
Children gazed longingly out of their huts, willing the down pour to end while adults smiled happily at the rain. Soon it had slowed from pouring and began a solemn drizzle that was stopped by the leaves and branches of many jungle trees. The water plunked down into the village as mist slowly seeped into their world.
The children dashed out to play. Mud squished between their toes as the rain plastered their black hair to their heads. The boys, dressed like all little indians, ran and whooped. Meanwhile the girls, in their brightly colored dresses, danced amidst the trees, laughing as their long, black hair swayed with their movements. The men tromped back to work as their wives set about making supper.
The afternoon would soon end. Another daily rain had come. She smiled to herself as she stepped out of the building she had taken shelter in during the rain. And, like the other villagers, she headed to work. The life of a missionary was never easy but the laughter of the kids, the happy smiles of the ladies she was helping, and the joy in the eyes of men who had found hope filled her soul and strengthened her calloused hands.
The sound of physical rain dripping in the rain forest was a wonderful reminder of the bountiful blessings God had poured out on her. Like the dancing feet of the little girls and the whoops and hollers of the boys, her heart danced to the song the raindrops played as they plunked onto the ground.
She smiled to herself as she recalled she had never planned on being there. But God had planned it. And so there she was far from the place she thought she wanted. She was far from where she had planned to be and instead she was in the Amazon listening to the peaceful hum of raindrops. The rain was calming her soul as she remembered her past adventures and reflected on the future ahead. And somehow she just knew that more adventures we just around the corner!
